How to get the best results after varicose veins treatment

After varicose veins treatment we want to help you get the best results you can.  We recommend you read the guidelines in our information sheet – we’ll email you before your scheduled procedure and our clinic nurse will also provide aftercare advice.

When can I exercise after varicose veins treatment?

We recommend resuming normal daily activities after your vein treatment.  However, strenuous exercise that raises your heart rate, including running, power walking, cycling, swimming, pilates, dancing, gym training and weight lifting can reopen your treated veins and is not recommended.

We also encourage light walking but do not lift anything over 10-12kgs for the recommended time, which is usually 10 days.  We recommend walking for a few minutes every half hour during the day, because this will help prevent complications, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  Seated exercises like toe tapping and rotating ankles encourages circulation. Do these if you are sitting or standing for long periods.  If you need to take a long car journey, you will need to stop and walk for a few minutes after 45 minutes and do some exercises while in your seat in the car.

We encourage walking but don’t do any heavy lifting.

How long do I wear compression stockings for?

Your compression stockings must be worn 24hrs a day for the duration recommended, usually 10 days.  Do not remove them under any circumstances to have a look at your veins. Removing your compression stockings in this time will affect the treatment in your varicose veins and, therefore, the outcome.

It is okay to get them wet in the shower and to lightly dry them with a towel or hair dryer.  We can provide you with a plastic cover to keep your compression stockings dry in the shower if you prefer.  If you are struggling to manage your compression stockings please get in touch with the Simply Veins team.

Is travelling by plane okay after varicose veins treatment?

If you are travelling by plane within New Zealand keep up with the recommended light walking and seated exercises.  Pease talk to our Simply Veins team about International flights and travel plans.
