The best thing you can do for your veins and arteries, your circulation system and, actually your overall health, is to stop smoking. Vaping is no better either.

So, give me the bad news first

The bad news is that smoking causes enormous harm to the way your blood vessels function.  It reduces the efficiency of the way blood is carried around the body to our heart, lungs, all our organs. This includes our skin, fingers and toes.  Long-term smoking increases the likelihood of heart disease and heart attacks, problems with arteries and veins, as lung diseases and many types of cancer.

Vaping, too, is bad news. While vaping hasn’t been around long enough for definitive evidence, many of the side effects mirror smoking. Including coughing, headaches, shortness of breath. Vaping liquids also have a number of chemicals, including nicotine of varying strength. Remember, nicotine is the addictive ingredient, it’s the one that promotes ‘reward’ in the brain. Some vape liquid also contains cancer-causing chemicals. Such chemicals can affect not only the lungs but the circulatory system and other organs.

The good news is that there is a lot of help available to stop smoking and vaping.  There are prescription medications, quit coaches, phone support and information with guidelines about how to go about stopping smoking. For younger people, the Life Education Trust tours schools with information and theatre to hopefully help prevent students starting smoking or vaping.
